A good green idea spelled hard cash this month for SFU students Adam Drake, Brad Slavin and Ryan Murray.

The trio, dubbed Team EnergyCents, shared third place and a $1,500 purse with a UBC team in B.C. Hydro’s inaugural Power Smart Innovation Challenge, for their response to the question: How might B.C. Hydro foster an energy conservation culture in B.C.?

The three energy-smart innovators are all fourth-year students in the Surrey campus School of Interactive Arts and Technology. Their novel plan suggested conservation rewards via an online points-tracking tool, incentives in B.C. Hydro bills and a points card that energy savers could redeem for prizes.

Teams from 16 B.C. colleges and universities participated in the challenge, which was open to students, faculty and staff. The contest was based on a pilot challenge last year in which an SFU team placed second.

B.C. Hydro says it’s planning another competition in 2008.
