The SFU Clan men’s wrestling team picked up their fifth straight championship and the women claimed their second consecutive silver at the Canada West Championships last month.

The men’s program locked up the championship with gold medals at 68 kg, 72 kg, 90 kg and 130 kg. Isaac Wing, Hardeep Aujla, Dustyn Fisher and Jag Bhullar all took first place at the meet for the Clan.

Despite being clearly outweighed by all four of his opponents, Bhullar won his third consecutive gold medal at the conference championship. David Krawczyk (76 kg) won the Clan’s lone silver, while Pat McDonald, Bo Gregson  and Alec Tuura earned bronze.

With the team’s success the individual accolades followed, as Bhullar was named the outstanding wrestler of the year and SFU head coach Justin Abdou was named coach of the year.

The women’s team took second place with 34 points, five behind the first place Calgary Dinos. Ashley McKilligan (48 kg), Miranda Dick and Stacie Anaka (67 kg) all picked up gold medals in the championships, while Rita Pare, Danette Torgeson and Erin Church took silver and Raissa Dickinson earned bronze.

Dick was named the co-outstanding female wrestler along with Calgary’s Justine Bouchard, while Torgeson earned Rookie of the Year honours for the Clan.
Both men's and women's teams earned bids to the CIS championships with their performances.
