Writer-director Patricia Gruben, an SFU contemporary arts associate professor, will share her approach to teaching screenwriting and review her more recent academic work on narrative structure in western and Indian films.

Gruben directs the Praxis Centre for Screenwriters and the Field School in Art & Culture of Contemporary India.

Best known for her 1990 thriller Deep Sleep, Gruben has written and directed several experimental narrative shorts, two dramatic features and a feature-length documentary. Her films have been screened internationally in cinemas, on television and at numerous festivals including Toronto, Sundance, New York and Edinburgh.

Gruben also works as a script consultant and screenwriter, and has published several articles and book chapters on Canadian filmmakers, screenplay structure, and adaptation.

At SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts she teaches screenwriting, directing and acting for film, and film studies.
