In March, SFU associate professor of math Jonathan Jedwab receives the Hall medal from the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications. The medal recognizes Jedwab's exceptional "counting" prowess. Combinatorics is the study of counting, but at a rarefied level where mathematicians attempt to count very complicated phenomena in order to solve both theoretical and real-world problems related to digital information and transmission. The Hall medal cites Jedwab's ability to marry theoretical research with practical applications. Jedwab joined SFU in 2003 from HP Labs in the UK where he spent 14 years working in industrial research.
