How does an independent university system become increas-ingly answerable to the state? Join former SFU historian Hannah Gay, now of Imperial College, London, on Friday, March 16, 5:15-7 pm at the SFU Vancouver campus when she presents the 2007 John F. Hutchinson memorial lecture on Higher Education and The State, Britain: 1945-2000.
"In the later 20th century we see a wide range of interested parties attempting to work out a new social contract—one in which society agrees to continue its support for universities, but only in exchange for some recognizable contribution to the public good," she says. What such a contribution might be, and how government control should be applied, are aspects of an ongoing debate. The lecture is free. Call 604.291.5100 for reservations.
