SFU’s 2006-07 women’s basketball champs had to settle for fifth place this year after a heartrending quarter-final upset at the 2008 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s basketball championships March 7-9 in Saskatoon.

The Clan lost 71-68 to Laval in the first round, but rebounded to beat Memorial 93-67 in the consolation semi-finals and Saskatchewan 91-69 in the consolation final.

On a brighter note, the team’s fifth-year guard Lani Gibbons was named CIS women’s basketball player of the year at the tournament. Gibbons led the country in assists for the third year in a row, averaging 5.7 per game and 12.0 points per game.
