Anthony Perl, professor of political science and director of the urban studies program at SFU, has been appointed to the board of directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc. for a term of four years, effective April 21, 2008.

Perl is also vice-chair of the Centre for Sustainable Transportation and chairs the Transportation Research Board’s committee on intercity rail passenger systems. He recently authored a book, Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight Without Oil.

Perl holds a PhD from the University of Toronto in political science, an MA from University of Toronto in public administration and a BA with honours from Harvard University. He has written several books and more than 30 articles in scholarly journals.

VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates Canada's national passenger rail service. The board of directors oversees the business activities and other affairs of the corporation.
