Education doctoral student Paul Yeung has won the first Paul Tai Yip Ng memorial award. The $1,200 award recognizes the best SFU graduate student paper, in any discipline, that promotes understanding of cross-cultural activities, particularly as they apply to Canada and the Asia Pacific region.

Peter Eng, a long-time SFU benefactor, established an endowment within SFU's David Lam Centre for International Communication that funded the award, named in honour of his late father Paul Tai Yip Ng.

"My father, who attended university in Beijing and France, was very interested in education and admired the centre's work on international communication," says Eng, who presented Yeung with the award in April. "In commemorating his life, we are very pleased to be able to provide encouragement to young scholars and their research in this important area."

Yeung, who received his MA in counselling psychology from SFU in 2005, is research coordinator of an SFU study on the multilingual development of children in early French immersion programs. His prize-winning paper examines the psycho-social adjustment of Chinese immigrant children in so-called satellite families. It concludes they are doing well and have good relationships with their parents, despite geographic separation.
