The Canadian Club of Vancouver recently honoured SFU with its 2007 Baldwin-Lafontaine award for its contributions to the preservation and promotion of French language and culture in B.C. SFU's Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (Bureau des affaires francophones et Francophiles — BAFF/OFFA), created in 2003, has significantly expanded the university's French programming, including a BA in public administration and community services that is taught primarily in French. OFFA also organizes cultural activities designed to promote the value of French both on and off campus. The award commemorates the alliance of 19th century statesmen Robert Baldwin and Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine, which led to the establishment of Canada's democratic system.
