The Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists and the Engineering Geology Division of the Geological Society of America have named SFU earth sciences professor John Clague the 2008 Jahns Distinguished Lecturer in Engineering Geology.

The lectureship, named after engineering geologist Richard H. Jahns (1915-1983), is designed to promote student awareness of engineering geology through a series of North American lectures.

Clague, who chairs SFU’s Centre for Natural Hazard Research, is an authority on earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and floods. He has authored or co-authored more than 250 papers in 40 different journals, given countless public lectures, written two general interest books on geology and co-authored a textbook on natural hazards.
