Carol Thorbes, an information officer with SFU public affairs and media relations, has won the 2008 Prix d’Excellence gold award for best news release (English) from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE).

The press release headlined "Worms in space" and Thorbes’ follow-up efforts with local and national media ultimately resulted in the publication of scores of related print, TV and radio news items throughout the world.

The release informed the media about SFU molecular biologist and biochemist Bob Johnsen and his experiment with C. elegans worms bred aboard the International Space Station to determine the impact of prolonged radiation exposure on humans in space.

Thorbes, a nine-year SFU staffer, also won the Prix d’Excellence silver award in 2006 and the gold in 2005.

The CCAE is a professional organization representing pr, alumni and development staff at universities and colleges throughout the country.
