Drivers at SFU’s Burnaby campus will pay $7.84 per month more for parking in the fall as the university moves to save the student U-Pass transit-pass program.

"SFU’s commitment to sustainable transportation is paramount and we must do everything we can to preserve the U-Pass," says Warren Gill, VP-university relations.

Provincial funding cuts have forced the university to trim $6.4 million from a proposed 2008-09 operating budget – a budget that had already been reduced by $9.3 million.

The university’s share towards supporting the U-Pass program is $500,000 annually. To protect that, effective Sept. 1, all monthly parking permit rates will increase by $7.84, while hourly rates will go up 25 cents to $2.75 and daily rates will rise $1.00 to $11.75.
