Physics professor Neil Alberding (right) and mathematics professor Michael Monagan (left) are the winners of this year’s Excellence in Teaching awards from the Faculty of Science.

The award recognizes Alberding’s novel design and execution of a new studio physics course for SFU’s Surrey campus and new active-learning labs for existing physics courses. His student experiments in the studio course include such intriguing topics as the physics of karate and the spectroscopy of interstellar materials.

Monagan, whose teaching consistently draws strong student evaluations, designed a new program in industrial mathematics and assisted with improvements to the algebra curriculum. Each receives a $1000 grant.

The faculty also awarded graduate student teaching awards worth $500 to Michelle Nelson in biological sciences, Nadine Wicks and Kelly Kim in molecular biology and biochemistry, and David Owen in physics.
