A Continuing Studies program recently received a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) award for international cooperation. Debbie Bell, director of community education programs, was honoured in the gender-equity category for her work on Women, Poverty and Education in Mexico, a project launched in 1999. With funding from CIDA and the State of Baja California, Mexico, the program introduced low-income Mexican women into higher education and employment. The curriculum blends basic skills, such as math, English and computing, with human and social development knowledge. Participants complete their secondary education and receive a non-credit certificate from SFU and its Mexican academic partner, Universidad Iberoamericana Noroeste. In the course of their studies the program’s 145 grads have established over 40 projects addressing critical community needs. The program has now expanded to three cities.
