Two SFU communication co-op education students scooped up Student Communicator of the Year awards in both the internal and external excellence categories from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Marie Bartlett won for excellence in internal communications for her contributions in initiating and coordinating a print newsletter during her eight-month co-op placement with BC Hydro’s field services. She has since graduated with a post-baccalaureate diploma in communication and now works for CBC Radio 3 as an associate producer.

Melissa Chungfat, a fourth-year communication student, won the excellence in external communications award for a collaborative team marketing proposal for Salt Spring Coffee Company. The proposal encouraged the company’s customers to reduce waste by using re-usable mugs instead of disposable cups. Chungfat is now winding up an eight-month co-op job as a project assistant with the applied sciences co-op program. Bartlett and Chungfat also received $500 bursaries from the IABC, a professional network of more than 14,000 business communication professionals in more than 70 countries.
