In a tribute to former SFU ombudsperson Laurine Harrison, who died suddenly last year, the SFU Graduate Student Society (GSS) is renaming the graduate student lounge in the Maggie Benston Building as The Laurine Harrison Graduate Student Lounge.

The renaming recognizes Harrison’s work on behalf of graduate students, not only during her 14 years as ombudsperson but as one of the driving forces behind the creation of the graduate issues committee in the late ’80s. It was the organizational and ‘spiritual’ forerunner of the GSS.

“SFU’s graduate students owe a great debt to Ms. Harrison, and we're very proud to rename our grad lounge after her," says Michael Letourneau, computing science representative and former GSS chair.

An endowment fund in Harrison’s name has been created to support two undergraduate student awards and one graduate student award in perpetuity at SFU.
