Depression in the workplace costs Canada’s economy more than $30 billion a year in lost productivity, by some estimates, not to mention the human cost.

Now, thanks to a new self-help manual by SFU occupational health psychologists and practitioners Dan Bilsker, Merv Gilbert and Joti Samra, employees can take proactive steps toward recognizing and treating their own depression and other mental health issues in the workplace.

The 65-page handbook, Antidepressant Skills at Work: Dealing with Mood Problems in the Workplace, was produced in partnership with the Provincial Health Services Authority. Samra says it provides accurate information about depression but is not a replacement for treatment. The easy-to-read guidebook is intended for:

  • Workers who are feeling down and may be at risk for developing depression.
  • Those who have developed a mild or major depression.
  • Individuals who’ve been off work for a while.
  • Family, friends and workplace colleagues who want to help.
  • Employers and managers concerned about their staff.
  • Treatment providers looking for another tool to supplement their clinical treatment.

The contents include:

  • A description of depression, its possible causes and options for treatment.
  • Three practical skills based on scientific evidence for dealing with depressed mood, in a step-by-step format.
  • Stories showing how working people might use these skills.
  • An overview of workplace issues that arise for people dealing with depression.

The handbook can be downloaded as a pdf document or ordered in hard copy from the SFU Faculty of Health Science’s Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA) website http://www.carmha.ca/, under Publications.

Hard copies are $10 each, including printing, shipping & handling, and taxes, with bulk-mailing discounts on orders of more than 50 manuals.
