Thanks to some polished footwork, Fiona Lee is a world champion. The 17-year-old Coquitlam student—daughter of SFU pipe band major Terry Lee—is the 2007 under-18 world highland dance champion after securing four straight firsts in Dunoon, Scotland on Aug. 25.

Lee was crowned champion in front of a packed grandstand of Highland dance enthusiasts, including members of her family who accompanied her to Scotland.

A first-year student at SFU this September, Lee began dancing at the age of five.

“We’ve had a lot of successes with the band, but when it’s your own child it’s a different experience—it was overwhelming,” says pipe major Lee. The elite SFU pipe band has won four world championship titles and placed second this summer.
