Recruitment staff in SFU student services can express a sigh of satisfaction now that the latest fall semester enrolment figures are in:
  • Total students: 22,864 — a 4.7-percent increase over last year;
  • Total new-student enrolment: 5,467 — up 1 percent;
  • New students from elsewhere in Canada: 439 — up 17.1 percent;
  • New transfer students: 1,341 — a 7.2-percent increase, including a 23.9-percent increase in university transfers;
  • It’s also the first time that SFU has not only met its international enrolment target of 499 international students but exceeded it, enrolling 640 students from countries that include Burma, Mauritius, Nepal, Egypt, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Chris Payne, international recruitment coordinator, attributes some of the increase to a more concerted effort to attract international students already studying in B.C. high schools and colleges. And, he says, SFU sports coaches also recruited quite a few athletes from the U.S.
