SFU is helping financially challenged students, local food growers and suppliers and the environment—all in one tasty meal at the first annual EAT BC! charity dinner Friday, Sept. 21, 6:30 p.m. at the Burnaby campus Diamond Alumni Centre (DAC).

The mouthwatering event, part of this year’s two-week provincial EAT BC! campaign (Sept. 14–30), features an all-local menu including wild Chinook salmon, free-range chicken breast and fresh stuffed peppers, paired with complimentary local wines, appetizers and dessert.

The $75 price includes tax, tip, and a chance to win one of three EAT BC! contest prizes. Tickets are available until Sept. 21 from

“EAT BC! is just one event in a semester-long project to promote sustainability at SFU,” says Candace Bonfield, external relations director for Sustainable SFU.

“The EAT BC! campaign aims to support local growers and suppliers and help the environment by reducing the amount of shipping and fuel consumption needed to put food on our plates.”

Participating EAT BC! restaurants at the Burnaby campus include the DAC, MacKenzie and residence cafeterias and Nature’s Garden Organic Deli in the Cornerstone building. They will be serving signature local dishes until the end of September.

Next up is a sustainability festival at the Burnaby campus’ Convocation Mall on October 11 featuring an eco-fashion show, live music, a beverage garden, a marketplace and the Sustainability Learning Exchange Centre.

During September through November, watch for the Climate Change Speakers Series from the Climate Change Action Group.

“All of these events are collaboratively organized by many groups on campus, as well as individual faculty, staff and students,” says Bonfield. “They’re living examples of the SFU community taking SFU’s new tagline ‘Thinking of the World’ to heart. We hope that these events will get the rest of the community to think of sustainability as well.”
