The SFU Library’s Special Collections and Rare Books team is sponsoring its annual Yosef Wosk Friends of Special Collections Alcuin Society Lecture Nov. 16 at the Vancouver campus Fletcher Challenge Theatre, Rm. 1900, beginning 7:30 p.m. Entitled Reidfest, the event is a celebration of Robert R. Reid’s lifelong passion for fine printing. In 1949, he designed and printed Fraser Mines Vindicated in Vancouver and went on to publish and design many more beautifully printed books. He also mentored several young designers. Reid had an important design career in both Montreal and New York. He now lives in Vancouver and remains active in printing, design and mentoring younger printers/designers. Keynote speakers include artist Takao Tanabe, photographer Charlie Mayrs, publisher Rollin Milroy and professor Peter McNally. Admission is free, but reservations are advised (778.782.4658; library@sfu.ca).

Reidfest will be followed on Nov. 17 by the Alcuin Wayzgoose, a gathering of letter-press printers and book artists along with demonstrations on the making of paste papers, suminagashi (Japanese marbling) and bookbinding. The Alcuin Wayzgoose will be held at the Vancouver Public Library central branch (350 West Georgia) from 10 am – 4 pm. For more info contact 778.782.4626; www.lib.sfu.ca/special/.
