More than 50 school students aged 9–14 years showed off their robot-building skills Nov. 24 at the Fraser Valley FIRST Lego League Challenge at SFU’s Surrey campus. Teams from 10 Fraser Valley and Vancouver schools worked alongside adult coaches to design, build and program robots using LEGO Mindstorm technologies and play materials. Their mission: to build robots that could complete missions based on real-world challenges related to energy consumption. The winning team was the Afterburners, a team of kids from a Vancouver science and robotic club called Lochiel U-Connect. They will compete in the provincial finals in early 2008.
