More than 1000 junior and high school wrestlers will flock to Burnaby Mountain on December 19-21, for the massive 2007 War on the Floor wrestling tournament, held at SFU.

Featuring top wrestlers from Western Canada, the tournament will be spread out between two gyms at SFU and will feature wrestling on 11 mats at a time.

“It’s great to have this event on the hill because it’s an opportunity to bring the wrestling community together,” says SFU head wrestling coach Mike Jones.

“So many fantastic wrestlers have come through the British Columbia school system, and their development is a credit to the passion of people in the wrestling community.”

The tournament will not only feature top athletes and teams from British Columbia, but also from the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. SFU’s Central and West gyms will hold 11 mats, with novice competition beginning on December 19, leading up to the finals on December 21.

Under Jones, the SFU Clan wrestling program has a tradition of producing top-caliber student-athletes, many of whom began their careers at meets like War on the Floor. The Clan have produced four Olympic wrestling medalists, and is expected to place athletes on the 2008 Canadian Olympic team headed to Beijing, China.
