Certificate embraces corporate responsibility ABCs

A business education with a conscience: that’s what students can expect from the new Certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility.

SFU Business kicked off the unique undergraduate option this fall. It recognizes students who combine business courses on ethics, social responsibility, sustainable management practices and social innovation with complementary courses and activities outside the faculty.

"One of the goals of the certificate is to acknowledge those students who broaden their academic focus and make a contribution to their community through volunteer work or socially responsible activities," says SFU Business associate dean Colleen Collins.

"This certificate not only says a lot about who we are as a school—but also who our students are."

The certificate was originally championed by Global Agents for Change, an organization founded by SFU Business undergraduate students to mobilize young people to effect positive change in their communities.

The group recommended that social issues around business be given greater focus within the business program and that socially responsible extracurricular activities become a formalized part of their education.

Says Collins: "As a signatory to the United Nations-sanctioned Principles of Responsible Management, SFU Business seeks to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges facing society."

The annual Corporate Knights magazine survey, which ranks business schools based on corporate social responsibility, ethics and environmental sustainability, consistently rates SFU Business’ undergraduate and MBA programs among the top 10 in Canada.
