Last weekend belonged to the Clan—both away at the Canadian University Sport (CIS) national wrestling championships and at home at the Canada West basketball Final Four tournament.

SFU’s wrestlers won both the men’s and women’s 2010 CIS national titles at the University of Calgary March 6. In total, six SFU athletes won individual gold at the event, as the Clan men won their second overall and second straight CIS championship, while the women won their sixth CIS crown, their first since 2008. Also, SFU coach Mike Jones was named men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.

In basketball, the No.1 ranked Clan women beat the University of Regina Cougars 92–62 to win the Canada West title at home. They advance to their ninth straight appearance in the upcoming nationals in Hamilton, an event they have won four of the last eight years. The men finished out their final basketball season in the CIS with a 78–68 loss to the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

Two weeks ago women’s basketballer Robyn Buna (above) won Canada West most valuable player honours while Kristina Collins was named rookie of the year and Katie Miyazaki was named defensive player of the year. Buna and Laurelle Weigl were also named to the All-Star team.
