What a difference a year made for Ji Hoon Lee. A year at Fraser International College (FIC), the SFU-affiliated Burnaby campus pathway school, that is. Last month, the young Korean native from Seoul, became the first alumnus of FIC to graduate from SFU. He earned a BA with first-class honours.

But when he joined the college in September 2006 along with about 85 other inaugural students, Lee could barely put an English sentence together.

He entered one of FIC’s University Transfer Program (UTP) Stage 2 programs, offered in partnership with SFU as an alternative pathway to an SFU degree.

Students in the program take a selection of first-year courses equivalent to what they would take at SFU, with mostly the same instructors. But the classes are smaller—about 35 students—and teachers have more time to focus on their students’ individual language and learning needs.

"You don’t have to worry about what you are going to take or where the classrooms are or anything because it’s all there," says Lee. "And even after you graduate the (academic counselling) officers are still available to help you."

If they meet SFU’s grade-point average requirements, UTP Stage 2 grads can transfer to select SFU bachelor’s degree programs with advanced standing of up to 60 credit hours.

Lee says his FIC experience was invaluable. Aside from the coursework, it gave him time to get familiar with SFU and Canadian culture and improve his English so that he was able to breeze through his undergraduate years at SFU.

He begins an MA in economics at SFU this fall, after which he hopes to attend law school and make a life in Canada.

"I love this country," he says.
