Surrounded by hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers at the Burnaby campus on March 8, CBC-TV’s Rick Mercer announced SFU’s victory as both the national and the western regional winner in the third annual Spread the Net/UNICEF Canada university challenge.

The SFU community raised more than $16,000 during the six-month fundraising campaign, enough to buy 1,600 insecticide-treated bed nets to protect children from malaria in Liberia and Rwanda.

The star of the television hit comedy program The Rick Mercer Report arrived at the Burnaby campus on the tailwind of the Olympic spirit and proclaimed, "SFU, you have won gold."

Mercer launched the challenge last September from the Burnaby campus, issuing a challenge pitting West versus East in a national student fundraising competition.

Incentives for the top two fundraising schools included a personal visit from the comedian and a feature spot on his show. The SFU segment airs Tuesday, March 16 on CBC-TV at 8 pm PST.
