Philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian has donated $4 million to SFU Contemporary Arts at Woodward’s to support two major performance spaces bearing his name: the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema and the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre. The gift follows the North Vancouver businessman’s previous donations over the past two years totalling $5.5 million to support children’s health research in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The new 350-seat cinema will have the latest projection and sound systems to showcase student film projects as well as festival and community film screenings. It will also be suitable for lectures, panel discussions and large classes. The world art studio will be an acoustically sophisticated venue for the performance and study of world music. It will also house SFU’s extensive collection of Indonesian Gamelan instruments and African drums.
