The B.C. Innovation Council (BCIC) has recognized SFU engineering science professor Bozena Kaminska with its $25,000 Entrepreneurship Fellow award and alumnus business Hiretheworld.com with its $123,000 BCIC-New Ventures Competition first prize. Kaminska, a Canada Research Chair in wireless network sensors, made headlines in 2007 with her wearable wireless biosensors for heart monitoring. Her team has since created a new generation of devices for securing document storage and monitoring energy, objects and people. Hiretheworld.com, founded by SFU alumni Arash Afrooze and Terry Beech, who is now an SFU business instructor, and his brother Doug, uses an online technique called crowd sourcing to help mid-sized businesses find and employ talented workers from around world. The trio received help with their business from SFU Venture Connection.
