The linguistics department expects to host as many as 40 middle and high school students Feb. 4 at the 2010 North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad at the Burnaby campus. The three-hour event takes place at more than 100 sites across North America as competitors use computational and logical problem-solving skills to wrestle with brainteasers based on patterns found in the world’s languages. "The problems are very do-able without any special background in linguistics, computing science or foreign languages," says Cliff Burgess, a senior lecturer in the linguistics department and one of the event organizers. "The contest is a way for future university students to see something of what linguistics is about." More info: http://get.sfu.ca/qfuPFt
