SFU philosophy department chair Mark McPherran will spend the spring semester in 2010 at the University of San Francisco as the Mortimer Fleishhacker chair in philosophy. While there, he will pursue research for a book addressing Socrates’ continuing relevance. "(Socrates) still serves as a paradigm for the intellectual life of the humanities as a whole and for our wider culture," says McPherran.

He and a co-author plan to examine the depth and rational coherence of Socrates’ methods and views and their long-standing influence on western philosophy, Christianity and Islam. McPherran will also give three public lectures about the classical Greek philosopher.
