Ashish Gurung is one of many SFU Business students who are reaping top honours this year in national and international business competitions.
Student entrepreneurs shine on world stage
May 14, 2009
It’s proving to be a stellar year for SFU Business undergrads as they reap top awards at home and abroad. In April, Tim Coleman, Helen Lu and Jessica Wang took first place in the international L’Oreal E-strat on-line business competition, while Ashish Gurung and Milun Tesovic won the top business awards at the ACE/SIFE national competition held recently in Toronto.
Coleman, Lu and Wang beat out 40,000 students competing in teams from universities around the world to prove they were best at managing a virtual portfolio of cosmetic brands. The SFU team beat both the North American and Australian teams to take the regional prize—an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris, France to compete in the international finals—and then the international first prize: a €10,000 trip to the destination of their choice.
Gurung was named entrepreneurial leader of the year at the ACE/SIFE national competition while Tesovic was selected national student entrepreneur of the year and will represent Canada at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards in Chicago this fall.
ACE (Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship) and SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) are active on more than 50 university and college campuses across Canada, with more than 1,700 student leaders and entrepreneurs.
Gurung is president of SIFE SFU. In addition to his coursework and his involvement with SIFE, he also works part-time at the Surrey campus and is CEO of NüXD, an SFU spin-off business that designs interactive technology.
Tesovic, 22, is the owner and founder of Metroleap Media Inc., which runs the MetroLyrics.com website, consistently rated one of the top websites in Canada.
"I am proud to be representing Canada at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards so that I can demonstrate the amazing accomplishments students can do alongside a full course load," says Tesovic. "For me, ACE’s Student Entrepreneur Competition has been a great source of publicity and recognition. Most importantly, it has put me in touch with other young entrepreneurs across Canada."
