The five-time and current world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band is gearing up for a sixth title run this August at the World Pipe Band Championships, a.k.a. "The Worlds", in Glasgow, Scotland.

BBC Scotland recently announced that its coverage of the championships—and thus coverage of the SFU performances—will include live streaming on the Internet via www.bbc.co.uk/worlds. The band competes in the Grade One arena in Glasgow Aug. 15.

But if a transatlantic Glaswegian party is not on your holiday agenda you can still enjoy the skirl o’ the pipes at several events in B.C. and Washington State this summer.

"We’ve already performed at the Comox, Victoria and Bellingham highland games and the Sons of Scotland games in Tsawwassen this season," says pipe sergeant Jack Lee, whose brother Terry Lee is the band’s pipe major. "And we finished first at the B.C. Highland Games in Coquitlam June 27.

"Plus the rest of the summer is full of performance dates for both the SFU Pipe Band and our juvenile Robert Malcolm Memorial pipe bands."

The band’s July and August events include:

  • The Piping Hot Summer Drummer 2009 summer school on Silver Star Mountain, near Vernon, July 5-10 and July 12-17, including a special evening concert at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre July 10.
  • The Kamloops Highland Games, July 11.
  • The Pacific Northwest (Seattle) Scottish Highland Games in Enumclaw, Wash., July 24-26.
  • The Perth Highland Games in Perth, Scotland, Sunday, Aug. 09.
  • The 2009 World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, Saturday, Aug. 15.

After hearing the band in Victoria in May, my son and I decided to go to Glasgow to The Worlds to lend our support to SFU in its quest for number 6. Is there anything that we can do to show our support? Brian Saunders, Victoria
