An engaged citizenry is essential for democracy—and the university’s new certificate program in dialogue and civic engagement can help make that connection. "Citizens who are connected with each other and their local governments have an increased sense of belonging, trust, well-being and resilience," says Joanna Ashworth (above), director of SFU Continuing Studies dialogue programs.

"This program is for those already involved in community or civic engagement activities, and for those who want the skills to become effective participants and leaders." The program—core courses, skills workshops and a practicum—encourages critical and creative approaches to civic engagement.

All instructors and presenters are highly skilled engagement practitioners. The program’s first cohort begins in September 2009 and ends in April 2010. Details: www.sfu.ca/civicengagement or 778.782.7925.
