UniverCity picked up a gold award and a third-place ranking overall in the Sustainable Projects Category at the 2008 LivCom Awards. held this year in Dongguan, China. The LivCom Awards are an international initiative backed by the United Nations Environment Programme to honour global innovation in sustainable community building. Out of 280 submissions from cities all over the globe, the LivCom judges recognized UniverCity for its future development plans as well as its past initiatives, including its innovative storm-water management systems, comprehensive green-building guidelines, and first-in-Canada community transit-pass program. As well, UniverCity's Verdant project won a 2008 Best Practices in Affordable Housing award from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The project's units are priced at 20 per cent below market levels in perpetuity to provide more affordable housing for SFU faculty and staff.
