Can working off fat influence climate change? That’s one of the intriguing questions scientists Max Donelan, Scott Lear and Wolfgang Haider will address Nov. 19 in a free "café scientifique" at 6 pm at the Vancouver Public Library’s central branch. Moderated by former CBC host and local cultural personality Hal Wake, the public is invited to join the SFU trio in an informal discussion of "people power"—the human body, energy and the environment.

Scott Lear, a kinesiology professor like Donelan, is an expert on obesity. And Haider, a geographer, is a specialist on parks and recreation policy at SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management. The gathering will discuss everything from the energy content of food and body fat to dieting, exercise, global warming and government policy during an educational evening of stimulating discussion, music and healthy refreshments. SFU’s Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the Vancouver Public Library are sponsoring the event, which has limited seating. Reservations: 778.782.3229.
