SFU Community Trust and the City of Burnaby have won a Federation of Canadian Municipalities 2011 Sustainable Communities award in the integrated neighbourhood development category for their collaboration on SFU’s Burnaby campus UniverCity community. The award is given to municipal environmental projects across Canada that demonstrate excellence in environmental responsibility. It recognizes “large-scale developments that improve their environmental performance compared to ‘business as usual’ by combining efficient energy use, watershed protection and efficient land use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”. UniverCity is a complete green-oriented community that is currently home to more than 1,300 housing units and 3,000 residents.
