Air conditioning mechanic Cedric Yee, of facilities services, is the first-place winner in SFU’s first energy-savings suggestions competition, which ran from April 2009–March 31, 2010. Prizes were distributed at SFU’s Sustainability Fair earlier this semester.

Yee took first prize, an iPhone and service subscription, for his idea to remove secondary filters from large fans in Blusson Hall.

Facilities services tried out the idea and found that it worked well without compromising air quality. It will save an estimated $1,488 each year.

Student Lucretia Cullen took second prize—two tickets to a Canucks’ home game—for her suggestion to keep windows and doors closed after hours in the AQ, a move that could save up to $500/year. Air conditioning mechanic Frank Siegmann won third prize for suggesting that the condenser coils on campus refrigerators be cleaned, which could generate savings of $500 a year.
