SFU has chosen Claire Cupples (right) as the new Faculty of Science dean for a five-year term effective Aug. 1 and John Craig (left) as the new Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean pro-tem for a one-year term effective July 1.

"I believe our two largest faculties will be well served by the leadership of these two exceptional individuals, and I look forward to working with them both," says VP-academic Jon Driver.

Cupples joins SFU after seven years at the University of Victoria, initially as chair of biochemistry and microbiology, then associate dean, and for the last year as acting dean of science. Prior to UVic, Cupples chaired the biology department at Montreal’s Concordia University for six years.

"She brings considerable strengths in strategic planning and organizational leadership," says Driver, "and a real passion for science across the breadth of disciplines and the importance of sharing knowledge through community outreach."

Craig is a former chair of SFU’s history department where he has been a faculty member since 1994. "He is a well-respected scholar who understands both the humanities and social sciences," says Driver.

He adds, Craig has "the combination of administrative experience and knowledge of the faculty that will enable him to provide strong leadership during the upcoming transitional year."
