Trust chair to receive Chancellor’s Service award

SFU will honour David Gillanders, QC, who chairs the SFU Community Trust’s board of directors, with the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award during its 2008 awards ceremony Feb. 20.
The award recognizes individuals outside the university community who have made a distinguished contribution to the province in areas in which SFU has a major interest or direct association.
Gillanders was instrumental in the creation of the Trust and has been instrumental in ensuring that it meets its goal of creating a sustainable community at UniverCity while creating an endowment and other sources of revenues to support the university.
Gillander is a partner and senior practitioner in the Vancouver office of the business law firm Stikeman Elliott. His practice includes residential, commercial and industrial real estate development, sales, financing, syndication and leasing, with particular expertise in residential, shopping centre, office and mixed-use developments. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the International Council of Shopping Centres and is a director and past president of Lambda Alpha International (Vancouver Chapter).
In addition to his work with the Trust, Gillander donates his time and expertise as a director of the Vancouver Summer Music Festival, the Bill Reid Foundation and the Laurier Institution and is a former director and past president of the Vancouver Opera Association. He is also a former director and member of numerous boards including the Vancouver Club, Children’s Hospital, York House School and St. George’s School.
