On the run for fun

These SFU runners don't pound the pavement for medals or glory -- they do it for a good cause. They're part of an informal team of university staff, students, faculty and alumni who participate in the annual 24-hour relay, a fundraising event held at Central Park in Burnaby. Proceeds go to help disabled children. The team was started 17 years ago by Joe Van Snellenberg, administrative assistant, applied sciences, who has participated every year since. This year, the sum total of their efforts over the years reached an impressive $50,000 -- resulting in a plaque, recently presented by event organizers to new team captain, Barry Olsen, recreation cooordinator. Van Snellenberg has another reason for participating: "It's a heck of a lot of fun," he says. Anyone interested in joining the enthusiastic team can contact Olsen at barryo@sfu.ca. Shown (l-r) are long-time members: Olsen, Dave Kartz (registrar's), grad student Dave Crouch (kinesiology), Donalda Meyers (education), Sophie Dunbar (kinesiology), and Van Snellenberg.
