The International Research Promotion Council has conferred the prestigious World Scientists Forum's eminent scientist of the year 2005 award posthumously on Ellen Gee, who was a sociology professor at SFU from 1980 until her death in 2002.

Gee was one of a select group of international scientists to receive this honour in recognition of their research contributions and achievements in the field of science and medicine.

During her lifetime, Gee was the author/editor of more than 100 publications spanning three research areas: Canadian demography, the sociology of aging, and the sociology of families.

She held editorial positions with several academic journals and held elected positions with several academic organizations including the Canadian Association of Gerontology, the Canadian Population Society and the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association.
