Flags flew at half mast in early January as the SFU community expressed its deep sorrow at the horrific impact of the Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake and resulting tsunamis in southeast Asia.

To express the university's solidarity with those affected, a short memorial service will be held on Jan. 14 at 12:30 p.m. in convocation mall at the Burnaby campus followed by a minute of silence observed on the university's three campuses.

Three co-op students working in Thailand were not harmed in the tsunami.

On-campus students who require crisis counselling to help deal with the tragedy should contact SFU's health, counselling and career centre at 604-291-4615 or visit the centre between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Faculty and staff requiring crisis counselling may call the university's employee and family assistance provider, Wilson Banwell - Human Solutions.

In Vancouver and the lower Main-land, call 604-689-1717. The toll free number for B.C., Yukon and North America is 1-800-663-1142.
