President Michael Stevenson kicked off the new year with his annual open forum on Jan. 31.

He spoke of a number of achievements that point to the success of the institution including the continued recruitment of top faculty and students, the success of SFU faculty in national competitions for research funding, the ongoing achievement of the university's athletic programs and the physical expansion of the university.

Stevenson also noted the development of a number of new programs, the expansion of offerings at SFU Surrey and the establishment of the faculty of health sciences, something he says "may well be the most significant development at SFU when the history is written 40 years hence." The audience in the Halpern centre and participating from other locations by way of a webcast heard Stevenson say that constraints on public funding mean the university will need to be more imaginative in seeking sources of funding. He said the $125 million Reaching New Heights campaign will be significant in this effort. With the approach of the 40th anniversary Stevenson said, "We were set on a path of innovation and the opening up of new territory in higher education 40 years ago and I am confident that we are continuing on that path with renewed energy and enthusiasm."
