Wintschel aims to teach children

Carly Wintschel is checking her calendar. Achieving the highest grade point average (3.808) has won her the deans undergraduate convocation medal in education.

So, will she make the convocation ceremony? Wintschel smiles. “I probably won't even be there because I'm off and running on my next adventure.”

That being a two-year teaching position with the Canadian International School in Singapore.

Armed with a major in education buttressed with three minors (biological science, early childhood education and psychology) and a certificate in liberal arts, 23-year-old Wintschel's options are many, but her life path was always clear. “Since I was really young, three or four, I've always wanted to be a teacher and never changed my mind. I just knew when I was a kid, and went straight forward and pursued it relentlessly.”

Specifically, she wants to teach children.

“I've always found myself in situations where I'm working with kids, whether teaching Sunday school, or doing after-school programs or coaching basketball, camp counselling, I did some relief work in school programs in Honduras and children's programs in Guatemala. It just always seemed to be where I found myself, working with kids, so it seemed natural.”

Natural, as in nature. Relationships, the world and the environment are her touchstones.
From taking outdoor classes where “the elements are real and kids can see nature, to promoting bottom-up recycling, Wintschel hopes to teach children “to be conscious of things you use and where things come from” and their stewardship of the future.

“I think the world is a beautiful creation, as are we, and it should be common sense to nurture both ourselves and the environment.

“That's pretty much my stance on why we should take care of the environment.”
