SFU conferred four honorary degrees during its 40th anniversary convocation ceremonies on Burnaby Mountain. Senator Roméo Dallaire (left), best known for his courageous command of the United Nations assistance mission during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, received an honorary doctor of laws. Alfred Bader, founder of the world's largest chemical supplier and a renowned art dealer and philanthropist, was made a doctor of science. Jeffrey Sachs, an internationally renowned economist who is a leader in the area of sustainable development and poverty reduction, was honoured with a doctor of laws. And SFU alumnus Allan Luke, a leader in international education and dean of Asia Pacific's largest funded educational research centre, received a doctor of laws.
