Do Vancouverites use English differently than folks in Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships or than folks just across the U.S. border in Vermont?

SFU lecturer Tony Pi, together with University of Toronto professor Jack Chambers, is trying to find out with a fun survey available in paper format or online.

The survey asks a variety of questions about how we pronounce words like asphalt and student and also how we use certain words, such as sneak and snuck.

Pi is hoping SFU staff, faculty and students who have lived in Greater Vancouver more than five years will take a few moments to fill out the survey. He also encourages any five-year or longer residents in the Vancouver area to fill out the survey. It's available at To obtain a paper copy, email tpi@sfu.ca
