Jackie La Sah Timothy, a Sliammon (Coast Salish) master carver, has spent the past six months in the former SFU gas station/studio carving a 15-foot yellow cedar totem. The project gives students in the First Nations studies' Indigenous Sustainable Arts course a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with a master artist and experience the traditional First Nations educational model of working with an artist/mentor. "It's important to share the culture, otherwise you have stereotypes," says Timothy. "Everybody gets a chance to learn and I learn also."
