SustainableSFU is launching a new initiative that will see SFU cafeterias, the SFU Student Society's Highland pub and UniverCity merchants adding more locally grown food to their menus. “For every bite we eat locally, we're helping reduce our campus' contribution to climate change by reducing the distance our food travels and the associated greenhouse gas emissions,” says Candace Bonfield, planning and communications coordinator for sustainableSFU. Bonfield says SFU's dining services contractor, Chartwells, will soon add a local-food weekly special in the residence cafeteria and then expand the concept to other university cafeterias. The Highland pub will kick off its participation with a local food and beer pub night in late November. The project team also plans a student design challenge to encourage urban agricultural initiatives and will work with the SFU Community Trust to develop welcome kits for new UniverCity residents. The kits will include a resource package for balcony gardening.
