Budget management and construction projects are twin passions for new associate VP-financial planning, Joe Weinberg.

A graduate civil engineer from the University of Toronto with a MBA from York University, Weinberg has spent the past 22 years at Ontario Power Generation (formerly Ontario Hydro), where he held various management positions in corporate finance and electricity production. He was most recently responsible for business planning and investment management for the organization's 69 hydroelectric power stations.

At SFU, Weinberg will assume responsibility for the university's budgeting and financial planning, treasury operations, risk and insurance and capital planning and development.

Weinberg took the new position, he says, because of the opportunity to blend his two passions.

“It's an opportunity to combine my engineering background and business management experience in an academic environment,” he says. “There is a great need for effective planning strategies to cope with financial pressures and requirements for expanded facilities and infrastructure.”
